  • Travel Talkers Toastmasters–River Cruises

The September 11th meeting of the Travel Talkers club, themed “River Cruises,” began with introductions and a moment of silence to remember the 9/11 attacks. Toastmaster Kit Myers welcomed the members, and President Meghan Burns introduced the evening’s theme, sharing her experience with river barges in London. Jacqueline Maynard-Campbell, the Toastmaster for the evening, highlighted the importance of remembering 9/11 and shared her experiences cruising on American rivers, emphasizing the need to appreciate domestic river cruises alongside the more popular European ones.

    Destination Master

Jacqueline, the Destination Master for the meeting, continued the theme of river cruises by asking the names of the two rivers that are part of a Pacific Northwest adventure. She provided these clues:

    • This river cruise is an 8 to 9 day journey from Portland, Oregon to Clarkston, Washington.
    • From the ship you can see Mt. St Helens, Multnomah Falls and the Cascade Mountain range.

If you guessed the Columbia and Snake Rivers, you are correct!

    Wild West Tour Guide Adventures

Kit Myers delivered a keynote-style speech titled “Exploring the Wild West of North America Together,” sharing her experiences as a tour guide for a major wholesale tour and travel operator. She shared stories from her 21-day tours, including a memorable interaction with a doctor who helped evaluate her language skills. Kit also mentioned receiving a Cartier watch as part of the “5 Year Club,” signifying her membership in a select group of tour guides.

Kit described tour destinations such as Yosemite, Banff, and Calgary, and reflected on her role as a multilingual guide for international tourists. She highlighted the challenges and rewards of managing diverse groups and the importance of communication skills. Kit also reminisced about her mother’s advice and life choices, including her decision to become a teacher despite initial doubts.

She emphasized the importance of making friends and entertaining passengers, recounting how her mother’s initiative with a piano in a bar fostered camaraderie among diverse groups, including Germans, Dutch, and Australians. The tour, which included stops at national parks and scenic locations, was a success due to the passengers’ willingness to engage and share cultural experiences, leaving a lasting impact on Kit and her group.

    Travel Topics–River Cruise Experiences

Tym Myers, the Destination Master for the meeting, started the impromptu speaking session with questions about river cruises by first asking Judith Ferber about her experiences. Judith shared her memories of cruises on the Danube and in the United States, expressing a preference for more modest cruises over luxurious ones. Meghan discussed the differences between ocean and river cruises, noting that river cruises require smaller, specialized boats due to the narrowness of rivers. She expressed interest in trying a river cruise to compare it to her ocean cruise experiences.

  • Travel Talkers Toastmasters — Group Tours

The theme of our September 4, 2025, meeting was Group Tours and the word of the day for the meeting was camaraderie. The meeting centered on a discussion of the concept of “Moments of Truth.” Members shared personal experiences that shaped their perceptions of Toastmasters, highlighting the club’s supportive environment and global camaraderie. As part of the meeting we conducted a performance review of the club using the Moments of Truth framework. The club received positive ratings in several areas including meeting structure and organization, while identifying membership strength as an area for improvement.

    Destination Master

Our Destination Master, Tym Myers, presented theses clues about a specific world-renowned waterfall, considered by many to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Tym asked us to provide the name of the waterfall and to identify each of the three waterfalls that are part of the this major natural wonder at the US-Canada border.

    • This major waterfall consists of three waterfalls.
    • During peak water release (Spring and Summer) a total of 99,000 cubic feet of water flow over these waterfalls every second.
    • The larger of the named falls has the largest vertical drop in North America of 187 feet.
    • Samuel de Champlain is credited with being the first European to see these falls in 1604.
    • Theodosia Burr Alston ( daughter of Vice-President Aaron Burr) and her husband Joseph Alston were the first recorded couple to have honeymooned at the waterfalls in 1801.

If you guessed Niagara Falls—which includes Horseshoe Falls, straddling the international border between two countries, as well as two smaller falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, both of which are in the United States—you are correct!

    Travel Topics

Lisa Hamil led the Travel Topics session which followed the meeting theme of Group Tours. Lisa asked our members how to plan a group tour for our club–where would we go, what method of transportation would we use, what foods would we enjoy. Avis suggested a comprehensive bus and train tour across North America, Europe, and the Bahamas, while Tym proposed a more compact 3-week itinerary. Jessy expressed interest in visiting Mars, inspired by a science fiction book series, and the group explored the idea of traveling as protons at the speed of light. The discussion highlighted our diverse travel preferences and the challenge of coordinating group experiences within realistic timeframes. Group Travel could also include a food-related theme, with Victoria suggesting American comfort food, including fried catfish, greens, peach cobbler, and sweet tea. Lisa asked about collaboration strategies for a group trip, focusing on travel coordination and logistics. Jacqueline suggested that planning would be necessary, depending on the type of tour, such as meeting at a central location for cruises or coordinating flights from local airports. More planning is needed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip together.

    Transformative Moments in Toastmasters

Helen Josephine, the speaker for the meeting, focused her presentation on the concept of “Moments of Truth” in Toastmasters, where members share and discuss their personal experiences that shaped their perceptions of the organization. As the facilitator, Helen encouraged participants to reflect on instances that formed lasting impressions of the club’s quality and service. Several members, including Tym, Meghan, Jessy, Avis, Kit, Lisa, and Jacqueline, shared their moments of truth, highlighting the club’s global camaraderie, supportive environment, and the transformative impact of public speaking. The discussion emphasized the value of consistent participation, honest introspection, continuous improvement, and the club’s ability to foster personal growth and community through shared experiences.

    Club Performance Review and Improvements

As part of her presentation, Helen reviewed club performance across various areas using the “Moments of Truth” framework. She highlighted positive feedback on first impressions and membership orientation, noting that new members Victoria and Jessy were recently welcomed, with mentor Kit assigned to guide them. The club received an “A” rating for meeting structure and organization, including timely starts and ends. Membership strength was identified as an area for improvement, with suggestions to reach 20 members to achieve President’s Distinguished status. The club received a “B+” for achievement recognition, with plans to implement progress charts and enhance member recognition programs. Helen encouraged members to communicate improvement ideas to officers for implementation.

  • Travel Talkers Toastmasters–Adventures in South America

Our Open House meeting on Thursday, October 24 included 9 members and 6 guests. The meeting theme was Adventures in South America. We invited former members and guests to join us for Travel Topics, to guess the Mystery Destination, and to hear Tym Myers speech about his adventures in South America.

Kit Myers was the Destination Master for the meeting. She presented these clues for a city in South America:

    • This city is surrounded by mountains and beaches. The famous mountains are Sugar Loaf and Corcovado. The famous beaches are Copa Cabana and Ipanema.
    • The city is know for its lush, humid, and exotic tropical location.
    • It is the second largest city in the largest country in South America.

If you guessed Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, you are correct!

The featured speaker for our meeting was Tym Myers who shared his adventures in South America. During his years as a commercial airline captain with American Airlines he regularly flew into 10 of the largest countries and 22 of the largest cities in South America. What was his favorite? Montevideo, Uruguay. Perhaps one of the lesser known places to visit in South America, but after Tym’s speech we were ready to book a trip to Montevideo to enjoy the art museums, the uncrowded beaches, the scenic wine valleys, and the grilled chicken, beef and pork served at street fairs and restaurants throughout the country.

Meghan Burns was our Travel Topics Master for the meeting. She provided a slide with pictures and topics inspired by South America for our members and guests to use during their turn at Travel Topics.
